In observance of International Update Your Resume Month, here are five quick tips that will help your resume do what is supposed to do: market your personal brand and get you the interview.

1. Tailor your resume according to the industry and position.

Tailoring your resume makes it more relevant because it shows that you’re a good fit for the role and increases your chances of getting the interview. Not sure how to tailor it? No worries. Check out the next tip.

2. Do your best to get some advice from an industry insider.

Doing an online search to look at examples and talking to Career Services can be helpful, but getting advice from someone who is actually in the industry gives you competitive advantage. An industry insider will help you use relevant industry language to identify key knowledge, skills, and abilities.

3. Make sure your bullet points tell stories.

Your bullet points should do more than state your duties. Bullet points should also show what you accomplished. For example, “Responsible for data entry” is a weak bullet point. Change that to something like this:

• Accurately entered and updated alumni contact information in BannerWeb after yearly alumni surveys.

See the difference? That bullet point tells a story. It showcases your specific software knowledge (technical skill) and an attention to detail (soft skill).

That brings us to the next tip.

4. Remember to highlight your soft skills, not just your technical skills.

You definitely need to make sure the requisite technical skills are listed. But when you talk to your industry insider, if you pay close attention to what they are saying, you will hear soft skills being directly or indirectly mentioned. If you aren’t sure, just ask them, “What does it take to be successful in the industry?” They are practically guaranteed to mention some soft skills.

5. Get somebody else to help you edit.

You really don’t want to be the only set of eyes on your resume. Finish it up and get a couple of other people to take a look at it, especially your industry insider.
